What’s the easiest way to communicate to a payer that medical procedures and services submitted for reimbursement are not
straightforward cases? Rather than submitting pages of medical
records and operative reports, a CPT modifier often can accurately describe what has occurred and help reduce the claims submission nightmares familiar to most plastic surgeons.
Gender-affirming surgery is effective and medically necessary in the treatment of gender dysphoria. Though not ubiquitous, some insurers now provide coverage for gender-affirming facial surgery, namely facial feminization surgery (FFS). Though coding in this realm remains relatively new, it has significant overlap with better-known facial reconstruction procedures. This month’s CPT Corner examines general guidelines for coding these procedures. As the specific nature of the procedures performed for an individual patient will vary, it’s not surprising that coding recommendations cannot always capture each specific situation.
The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accredits ASPS to provide educational activities and material with Category 1 CME credits. As an official CME provider, ASPS must comply with all ACCME standards, as outlined in the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
